Vintage Japanese Moriage dragonware demitasse cup and saucer. This style of porcelain, featuring raised enamel dragons, dates from around the 1880s and later.
The raised decoration technique is called moriage, created using a thick mixture of clay and water (slip).
The field of the pottery is often a matte gray to black color, with the highly ornamented dragon swirling around the entire item.
Pieces like this may be from the Occupied Japan period (1946-1947), though many earlier pieces are unmarked.
Dragonware was typically intended for decoration rather than daily use.
